You Have Sensors. Now What?
In our last post, we covered the five sensors every home needs: water leak, door/window, motion, temperature/humidity, and smoke/CO.
You bought them. You installed them. You’re getting alerts on your phone.
Good start. But you’re barely scratching the surface.
Sensors aren’t just for alerts. They’re for automation. They’re for making your home react to you — without you lifting a finger.
This post is about the advanced stuff. The automations that feel like magic. The ones that make guests say, “Wait, how did that happen?”
Let’s dive in.
The Golden Rule of Automation
Before we start, remember this:
Every automation should solve a real problem or save real time.
Don’t automate just because you can. Automate because it makes your life easier.
If you spend 30 minutes setting up an automation that saves you 5 seconds a week, you’ve wasted time. Focus on the big wins.
Automation 1: The No-More-Stubbed-Toes Hallway
The problem: You wake up at 2 AM to use the bathroom. The hallway is pitch black. You stumble. You stub your toe. You wake up your partner with the overhead light.
The sensors: Motion sensor (hallway), door sensor (bedroom door)
The automations:
- When bedroom door opens between 10 PM and 6 AM → Turn on hallway light at 20% brightness
- When motion detected in hallway between 10 PM and 6 AM → Keep light on for 2 minutes
- When no motion for 2 minutes → Turn off hallway light
The result: Soft light guides your path. You see where you’re going. Your partner stays asleep. No stubbed toes.
Setup time: 10 minutes
Daily time saved: 30 seconds (but priceless for toe safety)
Automation 2: The “Leaving Home” Security Sweep
The problem: You leave for work. Did you close the garage? Lock the back door? Turn off the lights? You’re halfway down the street, wondering.
The sensors: Door/window sensors (all exterior doors), motion sensors, garage door sensor
The automations:
- When you leave home (geofencing or “Goodbye” voice command) → Check all door/window sensors
- If any door/window is open → Send phone alert: “Front door is still open”
- If all doors/windows are closed → Turn off all lights, turn off TV, arm security system
The result: You leave with confidence. Your phone tells you if you forgot something. Your home secures itself.
Setup time: 15 minutes
Daily time saved: 2-5 minutes (and endless peace of mind)
Automation 3: The “Welcome Home” Arrival
The problem: You come home late. It’s dark. You fumble for keys. You can’t find the light switch. You drop your bags.
The sensors: Door sensor (front door), motion sensor (entryway)
The automations:
- When front door opens between sunset and sunrise → Turn on entryway light at 50%
- When motion detected in entryway after door opens → Turn on living room light at 80%
- After 5 minutes with no motion → Turn off entryway light
The result: Your home welcomes you. Lights turn on as you walk in. You can see. You can breathe. You feel safe.
Setup time: 10 minutes
Daily time saved: 30 seconds (but the feeling is priceless)
Automation 4: The “Movie Night” Mode
The problem: You want to watch a movie. You need to dim the lights, close the blinds, turn off the phone, and start the TV. That’s four separate actions.
The sensors: None (this is a scene, not a sensor automation)
The automation (voice or button trigger):
- “Alexa, movie night” or press a smart button →
- Dim living room lights to 10%
- Close smart blinds
- Turn on TV
- Set soundbar to movie mode
- Turn phone to Do Not Disturb
The result: One command. Everything sets up for you. You never leave your seat.
Setup time: 15 minutes
Daily time saved: 2 minutes per movie night
Automation 5: The “No More Wet Basement” Flood Protection
The problem: Your basement floods when the sump pump fails. You don’t know until you go downstairs and step in water.
The sensors: Water leak sensor (next to sump pump), temperature/humidity sensor (basement)
The automations:
- When water detected near sump pump → Send urgent phone alert + sound siren + turn on basement lights + start camera recording
- When basement humidity > 65% → Turn on dehumidifier (via smart plug)
- When basement temperature < 5°C (41°F) → Send freeze alert (pipes might burst)
The result: You know about water the second it appears. You can respond before damage spreads. Your basement stays dry.
Setup time: 15 minutes
Potential savings: Thousands in water damage
Automation 6: The “Kid Arrived Home” Alert
The problem: Your teenager comes home from school. You’re at work. You want to know they’re safe — without checking Life360 every five minutes.
The sensors: Door sensor (front door), motion sensor (entryway), contact sensor (garage door)
The automations:
- When the front door opens between 2 PM and 4 PM (school hours) → Send phone alert: “[Name] is home from school.”
- If garage door opens instead → Send phone alert: “[Name] came home through the garage”
- When motion is detected in kitchen after door opens → Send second alert: “[Name] is getting a snack”
The result: You know when your kids arrive home. You don’t need to text them. You don’t need to worry.
Setup time: 10 minutes
Daily peace of mind: Priceless
Automation 7: The “Energy Saver” Empty Home
The problem: You leave lights on when you’re not home. You forget to turn down the thermostat. Energy waste. Higher bills.
The sensors: Motion sensors (all rooms), door sensors (all exits)
The automations:
- When no motion detected in any room for 30 minutes AND all exterior doors are closed → Turn off all lights, lower thermostat by 5 degrees, turn off TV
- If motion is detected after “away” mode is active → Turn on entryway light (maybe someone came home)
The result: Your home saves energy automatically. You don’t have to remember.
Setup time: 15 minutes
Monthly savings: 10-20% on energy bills
Automation 8: The “Good Morning” Routine
The problem: Mornings are chaotic. You wake up to a loud alarm. You stumble to the bathroom. You turn on bright lights. You’re grumpy.
The sensors: Bed sensor (optional), smart alarm
The automations:
- At 6:30 AM (or when bed sensor detects you’re awake) →
- Gradually brighten bedroom lights over 10 minutes (sunrise simulation)
- Start coffee maker (smart plug)
- Set thermostat to daytime temperature
- Play morning news briefing on smart speaker
- Open bedroom blinds (smart blinds)
The result: You wake up gently. Coffee is ready. Your room is warm. You start the day calm, not chaotic.
Setup time: 20 minutes
Daily mood improvement: Significant
Automation 9: The “Vacation Mode” Security
The problem: You’re on vacation. Your home is empty. You worry about burglars.
The sensors: All door/window sensors, all motion sensors, water leak sensors
The automations:
- When “Vacation mode” is activated →
- Randomize lights (turn on/off at random times to simulate occupancy)
- If any door/window opens → Send urgent alert + trigger siren + start all cameras recording
- If any motion detected inside → Send alert + trigger siren
- If water detected → Send alert + shut off main water valve (with smart valve)
- If temperature drops below freezing → Send alert (pipes might burst)
The result: You enjoy your vacation. Your home protects itself. You get alerts only if something is wrong.
Setup time: 20 minutes
Vacation peace of mind: Priceless
Automation 10: The “Bedtime” Wind-Down
The problem: You stay up too late because you lose track of time. You forget to lock doors. You leave lights on.
The sensors: Door sensors, motion sensors
The automations:
- At 10 PM (or when you say “Goodnight” to Alexa) →
- Check all door/window sensors
- If any are open → Send alert: “Back door is still open”
- If all are closed → Lock smart locks, turn off all downstairs lights, turn off TV, set thermostat to nighttime temperature
- Dim bedroom lights to 20% over 30 minutes
The result: Your home prepares for sleep. You don’t have to check locks. You don’t have to turn off lights. You just go to bed.
Setup time: 15 minutes
Daily time saved: 3-5 minutes
Putting It All Together
You don’t need to implement all of these at once. Start with the ones that solve your biggest problems.
For most people, start here:
- No-more-stubbed-toes hallway (night lights)
- Leaving home security sweep
- Water leak detection
These three automations save time, prevent damage, and improve safety. Everything else is icing.

Real Customer Story
“I set up the ‘leaving home’ automation after I left the garage door open overnight. Twice. Now, when I leave, my phone checks all the doors. If something is open, it alerts me. If everything is closed, it turns off the lights and arms the security system. I haven’t left a door open since. Best automation I’ve ever built.”
